What makes a good line manager?

Being or aspiring to be a line manager is both exciting and challenging. Strong communication is the foundation of good leadership.  Developing skills such as delegation will not only build on a manager’s capacity but also assist with developing the team around the manager.

Our Inspiring Managers Programme outlines the essential knowledge, skills, and practical tools an individual will need to communicate effectively, support their team, handle key processes, and develop themselves as a leader.

There are five modules to this course.  Managers / aspiring managers can complete all modules or can elect to take part in a select number of modules dependent on their previous experience.  The areas that will be covered on the course are:

Module one: Communication & Interpersonal Skills

  • How to communicate openly and clearly with teams and senior leaders.
  • Practise active listening and stay aware of tone and non-verbal cues.
  • Providing timely, constructive feedback with appropriate documentation.
  • How to handle difficult conversations with confidence and clarity.
  • How to adapt your communication style to suit formal, sensitive or complex situations.

Module two: People Management

  • Building trust and acting as a positive role model.
  • How to coach and mentor team members to support growth.
  • Managing conflict and maintaining a respectful, inclusive environment.
  • Skills to foster a cohesive, diverse, and respectful team culture.
  • How to influence others through reasoning and strong relationships.
  • Understanding legal requirements in recruitment, equality and discrimination.
  • How to prioritise respect over popularity.

Module three: Delegation and Performance / Capability

  • How to delegate tasks clearly and appropriately.
  • Setting SMART goals aligned with organisational objectives.
  • Monitoring progress and offer regular guidance.
  • Conducting fair, evidence-based performance reviews.
  • Celebrating achievements and expressing appreciation.

Module four: Self-Awareness & Self-Development

  • Reflecting on past leadership experiences – life before line management.
  • Learning from mistakes and acknowledging areas for improvement.
  • Understanding your leadership style and its impact.
  • How to stay aware of your responsibilities and your team’s.
  • Upholding integrity, honesty and respect.
  • Remain open to feedback without taking it personally.

Module five: Operational and Strategic Knowledge

  • Understanding team roles, priorities and deliverables.
  • Aligning your work with the organisations mission, vision and values.
  • How to plan effectively and follow through on commitments.
  • Collaboration with other teams.
  • How to make confident, timely decisions.
  • Introduction to key organisational policies including wellbeing, capability, grievance, disciplinary and sexual harassment.

 

These interactive sessions are designed specifically for those with management responsibility in schools.
